ORA MARITIMA was written as a poem ('The Sea Coast') by Rufus Avenius around 400 AD. It contains a description of Northern and Western Europe based on a Phoenician voyage long before the Romans came to Britain.
The poem was chosen as a name for the association to recall the spirit in which the ancient mariners explored the unknown shores of Albion (England), Ierna (Ireland) and Scandia (Scandinavia).
Just the name of Alba (Scotland) inspires imagination. The west coast and the islands appear enticing and arouse curiosity. A visit to these places reveals melodious echoes of a Celtic past.
For 10 years we sailed in the Mediterranean, exploring ancient history. Now we cruise the coasts of Northern Europe, starting in Scotland.
